For example, we require your name, username, and email address. (You can voluntarily choose to share additional information in your profile, but this is not required.) We also require your contact details when you sign up to receive more information about courses, otherwise we cannot send you this information, and we collect information from you when you send messages to us (whether on the Media Arts Academy Site or on other platforms, e.g., social media sites). You may unsubscribe from Media Arts Academy promotional emails at any time by clicking “unsubscribe” on the emails you receive from us.
Media Arts Academy also automatically collects information about your visit to the Media Arts Academy Site when you browse courses on the Media Arts Academy Site, as explained in our Cookie Policy.
Some courses or programs are viewable on the Media Arts Academy Site but are offered in partnership with other providers. When you sign up to receive more information about these courses or programs, you supply your Personal Information directly to that provider or otherwise direct Media Arts Academy to share your information with that provider. In those cases, the privacy policies explaining the Personal Information that the provider collects, and how the provider uses it, will be made available to you when you sign up. If you later choose to unsubscribe from receiving promotional messages about these courses or programs, you must do so directly with the course provider by clicking “unsubscribe” on the email you receive from that provider. Providers of other courses or programs for which you have signed up to receive information will continue to send you communications unless and until you unsubscribe directly with that provider.
B. Enrolling in courses
Media Arts Academy collects information from you when you enroll in courses on the Media Arts Academy Site. For example, if you enroll in any course on the Media Arts Academy Site that requires payment to access the course and/or be eligible for a Certificate of Completion, we require Personal Information to enable you to pay for that course, so that our third-party vendor can process payment. A Certificate of Completion (“Certificate”) is a virtual certificate that shows that you have successfully completed your Media Arts Academy course or program or other product or service.
Note that Media Arts Academy does not itself collect or store financial account numbers or identification issued by a governmental entity, employer, or other authority. Instead, if you choose to make a purchase on the Media Arts Academy Site, you will be directed to Media Arts Academy’s third-party payment processor. If you do not wish to submit the required payment information, then you will not be able to move forward with your purchase.
Media Arts Academy also automatically collects information about your visit to the Media Arts Academy Site when you enroll in courses on the Media Arts Academy Site, as explained in the Cookie Policy.
When you enroll in a course on the Media Arts Academy Site, the Member that offers the course will receive Personal Information from your Media Arts Academy account profile.
As set out above, enrollment for some courses and programs viewable on the Media Arts Academy Site takes place on other sites. In those cases, this Privacy Policy does not apply. The course or program provider’s privacy policy will be made available to you when you begin the enrollment or application process.
C. Participating in courses
Media Arts Academy collects information from you when you participate in courses offered on the Media Arts Academy Site. VI-A. ADVERTISING TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES — FACEBOOK PIXEL AND GOOGLE ANALYTICS (New Section)
We want to be transparent about the advertising tracking tools we use on the Media Arts Academy Site and what they mean for you. This section explains what these tools are, what data they collect, and how you can opt out.
What Is the Facebook Pixel?
The Facebook Pixel is a small piece of code placed on our website by Meta Platforms, Inc. (Facebook). When you visit pages on the Media Arts Academy Site — including our course landing pages, free lesson opt-in pages, and checkout pages — the Facebook Pixel records that visit and certain actions you take, such as viewing a page or completing a purchase.
This information is sent to Facebook and is used for two purposes. First, it helps us understand whether our Facebook advertising is working — for example, whether someone who saw one of our ads later visited our website or enrolled in a course. Second, it allows us to show advertisements on Facebook and Instagram to people who have previously visited our website but did not enroll, a practice known as retargeting.
What data does the Facebook Pixel collect? The Facebook Pixel collects information such as your IP address, browser type, the pages you visited on our site, actions you took (such as submitting a form or completing a purchase), and the time and date of your visit. This information is associated with your Facebook account if you are logged into Facebook when you visit our site.
Facebook’s use of this data is governed by Facebook’s own Data Policy, which you can review at facebook.com/policy.php.
What Is Google Analytics?
Google Analytics is a web analytics service provided by Google LLC that helps us understand how visitors use the Media Arts Academy Site. When you visit our site, Google Analytics collects information such as which pages you visited, how long you spent on each page, where you came from (for example, a search engine or a social media platform), and what device and browser you used.
This information is used in aggregate to help us improve our website and understand which content and courses are most useful to our visitors. Google Analytics does not collect your name or email address unless you have voluntarily provided that information elsewhere on our site.
Google’s use of this data is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy, which you can review at policies.google.com/privacy.
What Is Retargeting?
Retargeting is a form of online advertising that allows us to show advertisements to people who have previously visited the Media Arts Academy Site. For example, if you visited our free lesson page but did not sign up, you may later see a Media Arts Academy advertisement on Facebook or Instagram reminding you about the free lesson.
Retargeting works through cookies — small text files stored in your browser — that allow advertising platforms to recognize your browser when you visit other websites. We only use retargeting to show advertisements for Media Arts Academy’s own courses and programs. We do not sell your data to third-party advertisers.
How to Opt Out of Advertising Tracking
You have several options to limit or opt out of advertising tracking:
Facebook: You can opt out of interest-based advertising from Facebook by visiting your Facebook Ad Preferences at facebook.com/ads/preferences or through the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out tool at optout.aboutads.info.
Google Analytics: You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, available at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Browser settings: Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through your browser settings. You can set your browser to refuse all cookies or to alert you when cookies are being sent. Note that disabling cookies may affect the functionality of some features on the Media Arts Academy Site.
Do Not Track: Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” feature that signals to websites that you do not want your online activity tracked. The Media Arts Academy Site does not currently respond to Do Not Track signals, but you may use the opt-out methods described above to limit tracking.
Your Privacy Choices: California residents may also opt out of the sale or sharing of their Personal Information for cross-context behavioral advertising as described in Section VII below.
A Note for Parents of Minor Students
Media Arts Academy serves homeschool students ages 9 to 18. Parents and guardians who enroll their children in our courses should be aware that our advertising tracking tools — the Facebook Pixel and Google Analytics — collect data based on the device and browser used to visit our site. If a parent visits our site on a shared family device, advertising tracking from that visit may be associated with that device’s browser. We encourage parents to review the opt-out options above if they have concerns about tracking on shared devices. We do not knowingly use advertising tracking tools to collect Personal Information directly from children under the age of 13.
VI-B. HOW TO MANAGE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION
